ROCKSTEADY MEETS REGGAE & DANCEHALL

Rocksteady Meets Reggae and Dancehall, the Big Ship Music event, spearheaded by veteran singer/songwriter, producer/promoter, Freddie McGregor, is now poised to land on the Jamalco Sports Complex, Hayes, in Freddie’s birth parish of Clarendon on Saturday, May 23, 3009.

Conceptualized in 1995, and having had three stagings in Florida and one in the US Virgin Islands, Rocksteady Meets Reggae and Dancehall will be held for the first time in Jamaica and buoyed by the aim of presenting a fun day of the people of Clarendon.

The day-long entertainment package commences at 10:00am, featuring Kiddies’ Fun Land, domino tournament and a 20/20 cricket match, Artistes vs. Celebrities, captained by Wayne Marshall and Courtney Walsh respectively. Others confirmed for the match are Brian Lara, Curtly Ambrose, Wicker Man, Barkey, Irie FM and RJR cricketers, as well as Freddie and Dean Fraser.

By nightfall, Rocksteady Meets Reggae and Dancehall will showcase a massive showdown of three of Jamaica’s renowned musical genres as a seamless entertainment programme. On one stage, patrons will experience over twenty (20) of the best of Jamaica’s popular music pioneers, professionals and young protégés; from U-Roy, John Holt, Ernie Smith and Leroy Sibbles of the heady Rocksteady era; through to Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths, Gregory Isaacs and Tarrus Riley represent the Reggae genre; as well as Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Chino and Laden for the ever-popular Dancehall.

 REGGAE FORUM TO EXAMINE IMPACT OF DEEJAYS, SOUNDMEN AND PROMOTERS ON THE MUSIC

  Richmond, V.A.,  April 23, 2009… In response to recent developments in Virginia’s dancehall scene, West Indian Times News Magazine and Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music (CPR) will host a community forum to address the question “Do radio deejays, soundmen and promoters contribute to the state of popular Jamaican music and the Island’s image?” The forum takes place on Saturday, May 2^nd at Caribbean Mingles Restaurant and Nightclub located at 17 W. Main Street, Richmond, VA from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. At the forum, a diverse panel will discuss this very timely issue and address questions and comments from the audience. They are King Walker, Virginia’s Lionheart Promotions; Chris Thomas, NY based Artist/Producer; Stan Evan Smith, Maryland based Journalist/Radio Host; Eunice Green, President of Association of Jamaicans in Richmond; Ottwell Richardson, President of West Indies United and DJ Joe Swynger, Radio DJ/Soundman.

 In recent years Virginia’s dancehall scene has seen a rise in violence which has led to venue closures and to a certain degree a mistrust of Caribbean businesses which promote reggae music.  This has had a tough economic impact on many businesses in VA and over and over the question has been posed as to whether the negative lyrics in popular Jamaican music are to blame. Since February 2009, CPR has hosted three extremely successful forums in the New York area, all of which have questioned and discussed the impact of dancehall music on reggae and Jamaica’s image.  It is therefore fitting that CPR is bringing the forum series to Virginia. 

 Initial reaction to the forum has been phenomenal; it seems the Virginia community has long awaited a chance to air their views regarding the state of Jamaica’s music and image. “I have been in Virginia for over eighteen years and have watched our radio deejays, soundmen and promoters dictate the path that dancehall has taken and this is the perfect opportunity for our community to come together and discuss what we need to do to change the negative course that it has taken” says Lady Cham editor of West Indian Times news magazine, radio host and co-organizer of the forum.  “We look forward to this opportunity to take our series to Richmond in our ongoing effort to raise the bar in the creation, development, promotion and presentation of reggae music,” says Sharon Gordon, chairperson and a co-founder of CPR.
